Understanding pest control in Albany, NY is important as the weather starts to warm up in the coming spring months. Some common pests that start to emerge in the spring are mosquitoes, ants, termites and stinging insects. Through these pests are in very different categories and each one comes with its own problems, the basics of pest control are the same. Most pests are in search of one basic need, food. From the termites eating the wood in your walls to the ants eating dry goods in your pantry, these pests are foraging for food to survive. Here are four basic steps to keeping these pests out of your house.

  1. Food Storage: Make sure that any food sources are sealed in airtight containers. This can be dry goods, like cereal in your pantry. Take trash out regularly. Additionally, feed pets at designated times and avoid leaving food out all day.. Make sure all these food sources are sealed tightly to keep pests out. If you do not do this and pests find a food source in your home, they will be more likely to continue to return and set up a colony in your home.

  2. Moisture: Make sure that any water sources are changed regularly or cleaned up thoroughly. Leaky pipes can add moisture to wood and attract termites to that area of your home. Problem areas like this should be repaired right away. A sink full of dirty dishes and and half full glasses of water will be like a beaming light that will attract ants. Eliminating water sources in your home can really make a difference in deterring pests. It may also be helpful to run a dehumidifier in places that easily become damp, like basements.

  3. Home Exterior: Take time to seal up the entire exterior of your home. Pests will get into your home even through the smallest cracks and gaps around your home. These cracks can be in doors, windows, screens and foundations. Gaps are commonly found around piping, wiring and venting. The best defense to keep pests out is to not allow them any easy access to the inside of your home.

  4. Landscaping: Make sure that the landscape around your house is not inviting pests to get closer to your home. Trim trees, shrubs and bushes away from the exterior of your home. Store wood sources at least 20 feet away from your home. Keeping your landscape groomed and away from your home will help keep pests from hiding out there and using it as a bridge to your home to forage for food.

If you find that you think you might already have a pest infestation in your home, it is best to call a professional pest exterminator to help you fully eliminate the problem. They will work with you to establish the pest infestation location, eliminate the pest completely and make sure you are set up with a year round plan to keep them away.
