The Asian Tiger Mosquito is a black-and-white striped insect, brought to Texas 30 years ago in a tire shipment. Since then, it has spread to 27 states according to CBS News.

  • The Asian Tiger Mosquito mosquitoes lay their eggs in water-filled containers and cavities like trees and old tires.
  • The Asian Tiger Mosquito usually does not fly more than about 1/2 mile from its breeding site.
  • Male mosquitoes feed on plant juices and do not bite, whereas, female mosquitoes seek blood to help their eggs develop.
  • The Asian Tiger Mosquito feeds during daylight hours, not at night.
  • The Asian Tiger Mosquito will bite squirrels, dogs, deer and other animals as well as people.

How do you repel Asian Tiger Mosquitoes?

  • Minimize time spent outdoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Be sure door and window screens fit tightly and are in good repair. The Asian Tiger Mosquito favors ankles and knees.
  • Wear shoes, socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt when outdoors for long periods of time, and when mosquitoes are most active.
  • When outdoors, apply insect repellent as indicated on the product’s label. The more DEET a product contains, the longer the repellent can protect against mosquito bites.
  • Have a Clifton Park mosquito exterminator treat your backyard and property with an insecticidal fog or mist. It is important to have mosquito treatments regularly as it is effective only for a short time. Mosquitoes will return when the spray dissipates.
  • Keep your property free of debris and potential mosquito breeding areas.
  • Drain all containers immediately because he's seen these bugs breed in a soda bottle cap.
