Beware of Bats in The Attic

Written by Admin | Apr 18, 2014 4:00:00 AM

Are you planning to tackling the seasonal project of switching your closets from winter to spring clothes? If you are, beware there are many animals in the attic that you can come across. Finding bats in the attic is common this time of year and certainly scary! As the temperatures warm up, attic spaces become ideal for bats to spend their days.

In the Albany NY are the most common species of bat is the little brown bat. Little brown bats have a wingspan of 8-9" and a body length of 3-4½ inches with a 1 ½ inch forearm, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Although there is nothing that will attract bats to your home or structure in particular, all bats need is a small hole or crack to sneak inside.

If you hear noises in the attic or find a bat in your home, it is recommended to contact the wildlife control professionals at Thomas Pest Services. There are several reasons why living with bats is not recommended and dangerous:

  1. Health Hazard. Bats are associated with a few diseases that affect people, such as rabies and histoplasmosis.

  2. Other Insects. Bat roosts can harbor parasites that may invade buildings like bat bugs and even fleas.

  3. Destructive. Bat droppings and urine can ruin insulation and attic spaces. Overtime, bat droppings  produce a unpleasant odor.  Bat hygiene requires them to rub themselves on surface of walls and entry points in their chosen dwelling place.

Avoiding any contact with bats should be prevented and avoided. If you are hearing noises or have had a bat in your home, you should call the Albany NY wildlife removal.
