As Halloween approaches, parents and children around Albany begin preparing their Halloween costume and purchasing candy to for trick-or-treaters. Halloween is the most spooky and scary holiday. However, sometimes our own homes can feel like a Haunted House when pest are present including: spiders, bed bugs, bats, rodents, roaches, centipedes and many more.

Beginning to decorate around your home or office, you may find yourself placing out rubber or plastic versions of spiders or rodents, normal Halloween décor, but no one wants to find spider webs, roaches, centipedes or rodents sharing their home with them. According to Orkin, more than a third (39 percent) of survey respondents dislike pests because "they are creepy," while 100 percent named cockroaches and centipedes the creepiest pests. Additionally, the top reason (43 percent) people dislike pests is because they fear being bitten, stung or attacked by insects like bed bugs (63 percent) and spiders (73 percent).

Most frightening pests include:

Bats

We are not referring to vampires or Dracula, but the brown bat most commonly found in the northeast. Bats can spread disease like Hantavirus and rabies. When dealing with bats, highly consider a bat removal specialist to control and prevent bats from returning.

Bed Bugs

Bed bugs do not spread disease, but feed on humans leaving behind itchy welts on their victims. Bed bugs are the size of an apple and usually come out at night to feed. Bed bugs can live for more than a year without a feeding – what a nightmare!

Centipedes

Their hundreds of legs are sure creepy. Centipedes often enter homes in search of water. A dehumidifier, trimming bushes/trees and fixing leaks will help deter these crawly insects from scarring you.

Roaches

Roaches are creepy in the sense that they crawl around your home spreading bacteria wherever they go. Roaches will hide in cracks and crevices, cardboards boxes and can even cause allergies and asthma. Cockroaches reproduce quickly, so when you see one, there is more hiding.

Rodents

Mice and rats are definitely not cute! Many individuals suffer from muriphobia, the fear of mice. Rodents carry disease, leaving a urination trail wherever they go along with their droppings. Rodents can also destroy property with their gnawing and cause fires from gnawing on electrical wires. Rodent removal and rodent control should be top priority for Albany homeowners.

Spiders

Spiders are fast and eerie, especially when walking thru their webs – ick! Some spiders have painful and poisonous bites, wonder why some people have arachnophobia, the fear of spiders.. Their webs are designed to catch insects for food – luckily we are not their bait!
