Fleas:
- Small (1/16 to 1/8-inch long).
- Usually dark colored.
- Wingless insects with long legs adapted for jumping vertically up to seven inches.
- Tube-like mouthparts adapted to feeding on the blood of their hosts.
- Compressed bodies are permitted for easy movement through the hairs or feathers on the host’s body.
- The flea body is hard to withstand great pressure, likely an adaptation to survive scratching, etc.
How they can affect your pets?
- Fleas attached a wide variety of warm-blooded vertebrates including dogs, cats, humans, chickens, rabbits, squirrels, rats and mice.
- Fleas are a nuisance.
- They create an itching sensation.
- Some animals suffer allergic reactions to flea saliva resulting in rashes.
- Bites often appear in clusters, inflamed with a single puncture point.
- Sometimes hair loss can be a result from frequent scratching and biting by the animal.
