Having Skunks Stinks

Written by Admin | Feb 15, 2016 5:00:00 AM

Let's be honest; most of us don't worry too much about skunks, until it is too late. These aren't generally aggressive creatures, and they aren't inclined to spray you unless you corner them or spook them. So, we don't pay them too much mind when we see them scurrying across our driveways or through our yards, but maybe we should rethink this tendency.

Why It Is a Bad Idea to Ignore Skunks

  1. They aren't always harmless. While it is true that your typical skunk isn't going to pose a threat to you, some skunks may be infected with the rabies virus, and this will cause them to behave erratically. Skunks have claws and teeth and are more than capable of attacking humans. Not only can they inflict wounds, they can spread the rabies virus to humans during these attacks. If you see a skunk pass through your property, make sure it keeps on going.

  2. They will spray when provoked. If you own pets your chances of misery are greatly increased. Domesticated animals do not know what a skunk is or what it can do. If they try to play with one, you're going to have to deal with cleaning a very smelly pet. Ask anyone who has ever done it; it is not fun.

  3. They will spray if cornered. If you have children, a skunk on your property could be a serious problem, and not for just the reasons above. Children are sporadic and fast moving, and can accidentally corner a skunk and cause it to react in defense.

  4. It can stink to have a skunk living on your property. When skunks get under your deck, porch, patio, or stairwells the smell can work its way up into your home. Sometimes, all the way to the very top. This can last for days at a time, depending on whether or not the invading skunk has recently sprayed and returned to their den.

  5. Skunks don't come alone. Like all wild animals, skunks can bring other creatures with them and introduce those creatures to your home. This can lead to an infestation of mites, fleas, ticks, and lice inside your home.
