Signs of Rodent Activity

Have a mouse in the house? Almost all homeowners know the feeling of unease that accompanies finding mice or rodents in your home. Whether in the kitchen, attic, basement or dining room – a rodent sighting can incite surprise and fear in even the most composed homeowner. Unfortunately, these mice are resourceful creatures that can enter a building or home through the smallest opening or crack, and require very little space to travel inside. Once inside, mice serve as vectors, carrying bacteria on their bodies spreading throughout your home.

House mice are said to be the most common mammal in the U.S., so it’s no surprise that many Clifton Park homeowners report dealing with infestations at one time or another. Because mice in the house are common in the northeast, you may think you already know all there is to know about this household pest, but do you know rodent signs.

  • Rodent Droppings: Rats leave dark, tapered droppings about 10-14mm long. Mice leave small, dark droppings particularly along walls and in storage areas or under sinks in houses.

  • Scratching noises as mice and rats scurry around.

  • Distinctive smell: Both mice and rats leave an ammonia-like smell that will be particularly strong in enclosed areas.

  • Damage: Mice and rats have teeth that grow continuously and gnaw on a variety of farm and household objects to keep them trim. Rodents can cause fires by chewing through cables and other materials.

  • Ripped feed packaging: Rodents will tear open feed bags and may leave teeth marks.

  • Nests: Rats and mice build nests in warm, hidden places using shredded material such as hay, straw, insulation, newspaper and various fabrics.

  • Grease marks: Rats tend to leave dirt or grease marks along walls and floors. If these obvious signs are not present, examine the surroundings for rat runs. These tracks are left in grass and low vegetation and act as foraging paths for rodents. Rats tend to follow the same paths after they have been established.
