The Ants Are Coming! The Ants Are Coming!

Most of us are familiar with the famous poem, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, where Revere was reported to ride through the towns near Boston, announcing that the Redcoats were on the march. However, have you heard the chant in New York State, The Ants Are Coming! The Ants Are Coming!? Well, if there were such a saying, it wouldn't be long before we'd be hearing it.

Though no one really understands why ants regularly pack up and move to new quarters in spring and in summer. It is a fact. And when this happens, these little critters often find their way into homes. If you would rather not have your house be a new home for a colony, (or two or three) of ants, the following list of ant prevention tips may be of help to you.

  • Store all garbage in cans with tightly fitting lids.

  • Keep all areas around the outside of your home free of standing water and moisture.

  • Remove any areas of dead vegetation where insects like to live.

  • Keep trees and bushes trimmed back away from your home. Insects and animals use these as bridges.

  • Make sure all your screens and door sweeps are in good working order.

  • Closely examine the outside of your foundation, walls and roof and seal up any gaps or cracks you find by using a caulking gun.

  • Thoroughly clean the inside of your home, paying close attention to areas where food is present. Vacuum rugs and furniture, and remove crumbs from the inside of toasters. Clean hard-to-reach areas such as underneath the stove. If you cannot wash dishes right away, place them in a sink full of soapy water.

  • Vacuum or sweep regularly. Ants can make a meal out of the smallest crumbs.

  • Keep all food in tightly sealed containers or in the refrigerator.

  • Make sure your kitchen trash can has a well-seated lids

  • Dry up any moist areas. Fix leaky pipes, sinks, toilets and tubs. Don't give ants a water source.
