The pest control truth behind the scenes at restaurants

A recent inspection to several Florida restaurants, proved to be less than pleasant. Food inspectors found live and dead roaches, fresh and dried rodent droppings and even droppings in an open package of pasta. Can you image going to eat dinner at one of these restaurants? I’ll take a rain check!

Cockroaches can spread at least 33 kinds of bacteria, 6 kinds of parasitic worms, and 7 other human pathogens. They can pick up germs on the spines of their legs and bodies as they crawl through sewage and then carry them into food or onto cooking surfaces. Germs that roaches eat from decaying matter or sewage are protected while inside them and can remain infected for weeks longer than if they had been exposed to cleaning agents, or sunlight and air. High reproductive rate of cockroaches can lead to large populations which can spread disease, contaminate and eat our food, as well as cause allergies and trigger asthma attacks.

Rodent droppings are one of the most reliable signs that there is a rodent problem. You may find droppings in areas that provide protection from predators like cupboards, under the sink, along walls, or on top of wall studs or beams. Mice will leave droppings near their nests as well along with storage rooms, sheds, barns, or cabins loaded with boxes, bags, old furniture, and other objects make an ideal home for rodents.

Hantaviruses is a result from exposure to rodent droppings, and the flu-like first signs of sickness (especially fever and muscle aches) appear one to six weeks later, followed by shortness of breath and coughing. Once this phase begins, the disease progresses rapidly requiring urgent care. Prevention is the best strategy, with a pest management plan in place to reduce the contact with rodents.
