Holidays are a high-risk time for developing bed bug infestations. With all the traveling and shopping going on, it leaves many ways for these little pests to gain entrance. It may be surprising how easy it is to pick up an infestation of bed bugs. Any public place can be a risk; public transportation, department stores, hotels, etc. They can come inside through suitcases or even family members who are visiting. It’s important to know the warning signs for bed bugs.

What to watch out for:

  • Bites! Bites are sometimes the first sign you’ll notice from bed bugs. These pests will feed on the blood of people and pets within the household, leaving a cluster of itchy bites. These bites will generally appear overnight and a rash may appear around them. It’s easy to confuse these bites with other bug bites, so if you notice bites appearing in the morning in clumps or patterns, you should do some further investigating.
  • You may notice the actual bugs inside your home, on you, or on your pets. Check out our pest identification page to make sure you know how to identify these bugs when you see them.
  • Blood stains may be present on sheets, pillows, or other bedding. This will come either from bed bugs or from the bites on you.
  • Bed bugs shed their skins as they develop and grow into adults. You can find these shed skins in your beddings or in other places of the house.
  • You may also notice small black specs or smears of feces in your bedding or around the furniture.

It’s easy for bed bugs to enter, but it is extremely difficult to get rid of these pests. Bed bugs won’t leave on their own. Once they’re inside, they have warmth, shelter, and food sources readily available. They have been ruled as one of the most difficult pests to treat. Even after trying your own elimination strategies you'll still be dealing with the frustration of an infestation. With bed bugs, it’s crucial to contact experts. DIY treatments have actually proven to be more dangerous than effective. We recently wrote an article about DIY treatments and what to do when they fail.
