Nests are located in protected areas within a structure, but they will also nest outdoors.
Maybe you're seeing pavement ants:
Dark brown to black in color.
1/16 to 1/8 of an inch in size.
Known for making their colonies in the cracks of pavement but commonly found foraging for food inside homes.
Or could it be small ants:
Dark brown, black or jet-black in color.
Range from 1 – 4 millimeters in length.
They build nests in areas such as woodwork voids, rotting logs, cracks in cement, lawns and walls.
