Avoiding Yellow Jackets Last Stand

One of the many benefits of the fall season in addition to the cooler weather, colorful leaves, and plentiful amount of apples and pumpkin spice products is that you can look forward to spending time outside without the constant threat of being stung by aggressive stinging insects, right? Well, unfortunately, no. At Thomas Pest Services we don’t want to be the bearer of bad news, but while it is true that there are pumpkin spice products wherever you turn, it is not true that the fall season brings the end to the threat of stinging insects like yellow jackets.

Yellow jackets are determined pests and won’t give up without a fight, they will continue to remain active for as long as they can. In addition to still being active in the fall, yellow jackets are particularly aggressive and testy in the fall, this is because their colony is at their max capacity and food is therefore limited. Yellow jackets in the fall are desperately flying around competing with each other to gather food from the small amount that is left. At the end of the summer and in the fall, yellow jackets can be found frantically trying to feed on human food and can be found buzzing around trash cans and any outdoor event where food is being served.

Yellow jackets can also become more dangerous to people in the fall because common fall activities like raking, mowing, and garden work can agitate these stinging insects and cause them to think that they need to defend themselves and their nest from you. Yellow jackets have a smooth stinger, meaning that unfortunately, a single yellow jacket can painfully sting you multiple times injecting their venom into you, which depending on the person can lead to serious health consequences.

If you are still seeing multiple yellow jackets flying around your property this fall, there is a good chance that there is an active nest located on your property or even worse in your home. Yellow jackets commonly build nests in homes behind walls, in the attic, or behind siding.
