What Does A Termite Look Like in New York?

New York State has one primary termite species: the Eastern Subterranean Termite. Here's how to identify the castes you're most likely to encounter:

Workers: Creamy white, about ¼ inch long, no wings. These are the termites doing the actual damage inside your wood.

Soldiers: Similar in size to workers but with a larger, rectangular tan or brown head and strong mandibles. They defend the colony.

Swarmers (Reproductives): About ⅜ inch long with two pairs of equal-length wings. Dark brown to black. Often mistaken for flying ants — but termites have straight antennae and equal-length win
gs, while ants have elbowed antennae and unequal wings.

DANGERS of Termites In Your Home or Property

Termites are one of the most destructive pest threats a property owner can face — not because they're dangerous to people, but because they work silently and invisibly until significant damage is already done.

Here's what's at stake:

Structural damage: Subterranean termites cause over $5 billion in property damage across the U.S. every year. A mature termite colony can consume approximately one foot of a 2x4 board in as little as six months — entirely out of sight inside your walls, flooring, and foundation supports.

Electrical hazards: As termites chew through wood, they will attack electrical wiring. This creates a risk of short circuits, equipment failure, and in some cases, fire.

Difficult and costly to eliminate: Termites are uniquely resilient. They survive in temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 100°F and in humidity as high as 95%. Even if every adult termite is eliminated, eggs left in the ground will hatch and restart the colony. This is why professional treatment — not DIY — is the only reliable solution.

Termites don't bite humans and won't put your family in direct physical danger — but left untreated, they can quietly compromise the structural integrity of your most valuable asset

How to prevent termites in your upstate NY home

The best termite treatment is the one you never need. Here are the most effective ways to make your property less attractive to termites:

1. Eliminate soil-to-wood contact. Direct contact between soil and wood siding, framing, or decking creates a highway for subterranean termites into your structure. Maintain a gap of at least 6 inches between soil and any wood elements.

2. Store firewood away from your home. Keep firewood stacked at least 20 feet from your home's foundation, off the ground, and under cover. Firewood piles are a prime termite harborage site.

3. Correct moisture problems. Termites are drawn to moisture. Fix leaking pipes, ensure gutters direct water away from the foundation, and consider a dehumidifier in your crawlspace or basement.

4. Maintain your yard and foundation perimeter. Remove dead stumps, wood debris, and leaf litter near your home. Keep mulch at least 15 inches from your foundation, or switch to rubber mulch or stone near the house.

5. Schedule annual termite inspections. Prevention is most effective when paired with professional monitoring. Thomas Pest Services offers ongoing Sentricon® monitoring that detects termite activity before damage begins.

Here's How Thomas Pest Services Eliminates Termites

When you contact Thomas Pest Services for a termite problem, here's exactly what happens:

Step 1: Free Termite Inspection One of our pest professionals will perform a thorough inspection of your property, inside and out, including your basement, crawlspace, foundation perimeter, and any wood structures. We document findings and provide a clear recommendation.

Step 2: Customized Treatment Plan. Every property is different. We'll design a treatment plan appropriate for your home or business, your level of infestation, and your goals for long-term protection.

Step 3: Sentricon® System Installation. We install the Sentricon® Termite Colony Elimination System around your property's perimeter. Termite workers discover the bait stations naturally while foraging. Once they begin feeding on the bait, they share it with the colony — including the queen. The active ingredient prevents termites from molting, halting reproduction and systematically collapsing the entire colony.

Unlike liquid barriers, Sentricon® requires no trenching or drilling and uses a small, targeted bait formulation rather than large volumes of chemical.

Step 4: Ongoing Monitoring Our team returns regularly to inspect and service the Sentricon® stations, replenish bait as needed, and confirm continued protection. You'll always know the status of your property.

Signs of A Termite Infestation

How do you know if you have termites? Learn how to spot termites in your home or commercial property by learning about these signs of termite infestation:

1.  Swarmers or discarded wings. Termite swarmers and/ or their discarded wings near windowsills and doors are often

the first and only outwardly visible signs that you have a termite problem.

2.  Mud tubes. Subterranean termites build mud tubes to provide moisture while they travel between their colony and food source.
They’re usually found near your home or building’s foundation.

3.  Wood damage. Look out for blistering pieces of wood and wood that sound hollow when tapped.

4.  Uneven or bubbling paint. This usually means moisture buildup, which could be a sign of water damage or termites.

If you suspect a termite infestation, don’t rely on DIY termite control. Eliminating wood-destroying insects from your home is difficult and best left up to a professional. If termites have decided to invade your home, contact the Albany pest control experts at Thomas Pest Services today!
