Warning Signs There Is A Mouse In The House

Dr. Seuss, famous for his rhyme-filled children's books, talks about mice and houses in one of his most well-known books, Green Eggs and Ham.

Would you like them in a house?

Would you like them with a mouse?

I do not like them in a house.

I do not like them with a mouse.

I do not like green eggs and ham.

I do not like them Sam-I-am.

The book, though just a silly children's book, makes a good point. No one likes eating anything--green or otherwise--in a mouse-infested house! And for good reason! Rodents are known disease carriers, potentially spreading diseases such as tularemia, rat-bite fever, OMSK hemorrhagic fever, and more. And they carry parasites: lice, ticks, and fleas to name a few. Yes, no one wants to live in a mouse-infested house.

If you are seeing mice running along your baseboards, there is no telling where that mouse came from. Mice are known to crawl through places such as open trash cans, dumpsters, and other filthy areas, not to mention sewers and drainage ditches. This is how they pick up disease-causing bacteria on their fur and inside their bodies (which they leave behind in their droppings and urine.)

But what if you aren't seeing mice in your home? Does that mean they are not there? Not necessarily. The following is a list of tell-tale signs that mice are infesting.

    • Tiny pill shaped droppings in the backs of drawers, on your cabinets, or in other places. If these droppings are fresh they will be moist and black. If they have been there a while, they will be dry, hard, and a greyish color.

    • Grease marks along baseboards or around entry holes. Mice have greasy fur and leave behind a greasy stain if they rub along a certain area enough times.

    • Sounds in your walls. Mice make scraping and scampering noises when they move through wall voids.

    • Chew marks. Since mice are rodents with ever-growing teeth, they will chew on just about anything--including wires--which can be a fire hazard.

If you are noticing these signs, or if you have actually seen mice inside your home, it is time to consult a professional pest control expert. Mice multiply quickly, and can quickly go from being a small nuisance to a big problem, spreading disease, damaging your belongings and your home with their chewing, and possibly causing a fire.
